With fine-motor ability being such an important skill in the completion of everyday activities, it is crucial that fine motor skills can develop from a young age.

What are fine motor skills?
Fine motor skills are the ability to make movements using the small muscles in our hands and wrists. Fine motor skills assist us to do key tasks in school, at work, and in everyday life. As young people develop these small movements come so naturally that we usually don’t think about them. For fine motor skills to develop, children require repeated and varied opportunities to explore and play with small world activities, puzzles, arts and crafts and the practise of using small tools, with feedback and support from adults.

Why are fine motor skills required for handwriting?
In order to participate in handwriting activities, children require fine motor skills to control the pencil in order to form letters and to use the correct pressure on the pen and on the paper. Therefore in order to improving handwriting, fine motor skills need to be improved.

This course offers a range of activities which will build and foster the development of fine motor skills to assist in activities involving the hands, including writing.
