My Place Life Skills Training Centre
This centre-based program of support is a perfect supplement for NDIS participants undertaking a SLES program.
Preparing Young Adults for Life
My Place by The Hills Learning Centre offers a comprehensive, independent life skills program for young adults aged 16-25years, living with a disability.
Our program of Support aims to build the life skills of young people so that they can participate and carry out tasks independently at home, in employment opportunities and in their local community. The centre runs with a 1:4 staff-to-participant ratio.
As an NDIS support program, My Place will provide our participants with the necessary skills to develop independence in their daily lives and gain confidence as they transition into adulthood.
Our Aims
- To ensure anti-discrimination
- Encourage full participation of participants
- Develop Independent living
- Economic self-sufficiency
Quality Facilities
My Place is designed to feel like home! We have a functioning kitchen and laundry facilities, a sofa bed to practice bedmaking, a dining area and a living/lounge area. All participants are encouraged to take ownership in the centre by helping to maintain it. Participants take part in house-keeping tasks such as vacuuming, sweeping, watering plants, washing up and cleaning.
They help with the shopping, including planning meals and making a grocery list for the week. All participants are encouraged to engage collaboratively in decision making about daily activities.
Skills for Life
The three major life skills areas that we concentrate on throughout the program are:
Daily living; Social Skills and Pre-vocational Occupational Skills.
Opportunities to develop the tools and skill sets required for individuals to perform daily tasks independently and to develop into
active and productive members of society is what we pride ourselves on delivering to our participants.
Skills for Daily Living
Participants are regularly presented with opportunities for building daily living skills such as handling money and debit cards, meal planning, preparation and shopping, house-keeping and cleaning skills, washing and ironing, self-care, safety awareness – including road safety and awareness and basic first aid, and travel training.
All provided within context in order to build capacity for individual participants.
Social Skills
Social skills are an integral part of participating as active members of the community. At ‘My Place’ we provide opportunities for building self-awareness, developing social responsibility, learning problem-solving strategies and improving communication skills. We regularly partake in excursions and events within the community.
We attend the local gym to build fitness and build community amongst ourselves. Utilising the public transport system, we travel to various places of interest and fun.
Occupational Skills
By developing social skills and daily living skills we are contributing to the many necessary skills needed to be active members within the work force. We provide opportunities for participants to develop appropriate work habits, including listening skills, following directions, taking initiative and building resilience.
Participants are encouraged to learn about methods of job seeking, seek work experience in an area of interest, write resumes and apply for possible jobs.
Program of Support
Our Program of Support courses run for the duration of 10-11 weeks. Each participant works towards Agreed Intended Outcomes in conjunction with their NDIS plan goals, which are reviewed and reported on at the end of each term. Participants can re-enrol to work towards a new Agreed Intended Outcome.
